Goal Setting
Goal Setting
A key area in our Peer Partners program is the ability to set goals. Those with serious mental health conditions can have difficulty setting future goals. This can occur if they are currently experiencing distress or if their current treatment plan focuses solely on mental health symptoms.
Traditional approaches to mental health may only prioritize treatment-related goals such as staying on medication or staying out of a hospital. However, they can miss things in a person’s life that are most meaningful and important to them. As a result, for someone coming out of a hospital, their main goals might be simple and narrow and not include the things that matter most to their lives.
In Peer Partners, facilitators help participants see beyond these short-term goals. They help them envision their future in ways that are meaningful to them. In this video, Patrick Hendry speaks about the importance of goal setting. He also guides future facilitators through this process.
