Internship Opportunities

Four people, two men and two women, standing in an indoor office setting. One of the men is wearing glasses. They look to be in their early-to-mid-twenties. All four people are smiling and looking at the camera and appear to be happy and content with their surroundings.

MHA's national office accepts applications for internships from individuals who are sponsored by a paid stipend through a university program or through a grant from another organization. We are currently not able to support other applications. All internships are with our DC-area headquarters in Alexandria, VA, although we may consider requests for remote internships on a case-by-case basis. For internship opportunities at one of our many local and regional affiliates, we recommend contacting them directly via our Find an Affiliate tool to inquire if they have any available positions.

At MHA, we take pride in considering our internships hands-on learning experiences. If you intern with us, you'll get a wide range of experience as well as access to staff members who can help coach you and teach you practical skills to supplement your education. A general interest in mental health is, of course, a plus in any of our positions.

Our internship opportunities are flexible to work with you. All interns are expected to work at least 20 hours per week, and to be available for 8 weeks (preferably consecutive) during the internship period. However, interns who work closer to a full-time work schedule typically gain more from their experience. We may adjust these requirements upon request to meet the needs of your stipend program. Opportunities are generally available year-round, but summer positions are the most popular and most competitive.

Please note that we do not provide clinical internships. We are Metro accessible by way of the Braddock Road station. We receive a high volume of internship requests and may not be able to respond to each application unless you are contacted for an interview.
