Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Month | Take some time to Look Around, Look Within

May is Mental Health Month!

Since 1949, Mental Health America, our affiliates, and countless others have observed May as Mental Health Month by reaching out to millions of people to spread the word that mental health is something everyone should care about. It’s a time to share information, stories, and resources, and we invite you to join us!

MHA’s 2023 Mental Health Month campaign is focused on how surroundings impact mental health, and we are calling for individuals to look around, look within.

Topics that we specifically address include:

  • Safe and Stable Housing
  • Healthy Home Environments
  • Neighborhoods and Towns
  • The Outdoors and Nature

We’ll help people understand how these topics impact mental health, provide tips for actions people can take to change their surroundings in favor of their well-being, and suggestions for how to cope if change isn’t realistic.

MHA’s May is Mental Health Month Outreach Toolkit has been created to help individuals and organizations work smart as they plan for raising mental health awareness during the month of May.

We’ve already done the leg work and listed out potential activities that you can do, written newsletter articles, created social media images and post language, come up with email signatures and zoom backgrounds, and made fact sheets, worksheets, posters, and a tip calendar (and more) for you to share.

May is Mental Health Month | Support Mental Health America through our 2023 Light Up Green campaign

Help us Light Up Green for Mental Health Awareness Month

Mental Health America is asking buildings all across the U.S. to light up green during Mental Health Month in May to help spread awareness ... and we would love your help! Reach out to landmark buildings in your area to see if they can light up green and support mental health month. Then, reach out to us at with your state, the name of the building, and the date(s) the building will be lit. All participating buildings will be recognized by our national office. Don't forget to snap a picture of the building in May and tag MHA and #mentalhealthmonth to be featured on our social media.

The L.L.Bean Feel-Good Challenge

In recognition of Mental Health Month and the feel-good benefits of time outside, L.L.Bean invites you to work together with other participants towards a combined goal of 500,000 hours outside during the month of May. L.L.Bean is donating $25,000 to Mental Health America – and will donate $50,000 if the challenge is met in May.
