This is a SAMHSA sponsored webinar presented by Mental Health America (MHA).
TW: this session will discuss death by suicide, the aftermath of a death, and the experiences of those bereaved by suicide. Please take care of yourself while consuming this information and reach out to a crisis line if you need immediate support: 988lifeline.org.
When someone dies by suicide, many are left alone, struggling through their grief. The bereavement period of a death can exacerbate or initiate mental health conditions and serious mental illness for those left trying to cope. This session will highlight the impactful work of LOSS Teams (Local Outreach to Suicide Survivors), which provide immediate support to those impacted by a death by suicide within hours or days after the event. LOSS Teams are composed of trained individuals who have experienced a similar loss and offer emotional care, practical help, and strategies for navigating the complex grief process.
Through this 60-minute session, we will discuss:
- The impact a death by suicide can have on the mental and emotional health of those grieving
- The structure of LOSS teams and their unique approach to community and peer support
- How LOSS teams are making a difference in the mental health of those affected by a death by suicide
