Alexandria, VA – This May, 70 landmarks across the nation will be lit in green, the color of mental health awareness, to mark the beginning of Mental Health Month and encourage the public to take a mental health screening.
Mental Health America (MHA) started the first mental health awareness observance in 1949, when the organization was then known as the National Association for Mental Health. Today the purpose of Mental Health Month is to raise awareness, educate the public about mental health conditions, encourage screening, and reduce the stigma that surrounds these conditions. One in five Americans will experience a mental health condition in a given year, and half of Americans will experience a mental health condition in their lifetime. It is important that those experiencing early symptoms of a mental health condition know what to look for, and get screened.
MHA offers free, anonymous, clinically-validated screenings at MHAScreening.org. MHA also has a full toolkit of educational resources for May, titled “Back to Basics,” available for download at https://mhanational.org/may. In addition, a network of 137 MHA affiliates across the country offers local resources in the community. To find an affiliate in your area, go here.
Members of the public are asked to post photos of landmarks lighting up green on Instagram and tag @MentalHealthAmerica.
